Charles Gallegos is also known as Richard or Rich by long time friends and close family, and occasionally as “Carlito” as his self chosen nickname. He is a legendary fisherman, father, husband, retired sheet metal engineer, and AA sponsor. Charles currently lives in Reno, NV with wife Terry Ann Stone and son Charles Anthony Gallegos. His other three children, Damion Gallegos, Melonie Gallegos and Bridget Varvel, and stepson Christopher, like to visit often.
Charles was diagnosed with cancer of the liver five years ago. He was told by doctors in February of 2009 he had six months to live. If you know him, you know he didn’t listen. It wasn’t a fight. It was war. He was able to get into an experimental chemotherapy where it delayed the growth of his baseball sized tumor for almost four years. His cancer was stubborn but he was even more. You know what they say, “keep your enemies close.” He made friends with his cancer, striking a deal to co-exist in this body that they now share.
With lots of prayers and an amazing support network from his immediate and extended Gallegos/Vega family, he has lived more in the past five years than others do in a lifetime. Many days have been spent on fishing adventures with his oldest son Damion Gallegos, best friend from childhood Ray Chew, and late cousin Oscar Vega. Charles has set and met personal goals, such as watching his youngest son Charles Anthony Gallegos graduate from high school. He has created happy new memories with his beautiful daughters Melonie Gallegos and Bridget Varvel. And, with their children Izalia, Faith and Santino on trips to Disneyland, Lake Tahoe and to his timeshare in Sonoma. Being a grandfather is right up there with fishing when it comes to things he loves.
So is his love for music. This is something special that he shares with wife, Terry Ann. Living in Reno has it perks and going to concerts is one of them. Santana and Gloria Estefan are favorites. But, nothing, absolutely nothing, beats the moment Sheila E. spotted Charles in the front row of her concert and gave him a big genuine hug. In case you haven’t heard the story, Charles partied with Sheila E’s Father around his hometown in Hayward, CA. Not that Sheila knew this at that moment… Might be best she never knows what her dad was up to in the 70’s with Rich.

[Updated March 11, 2014] Charles is home with his family in Reno fighting the fight. Unfortunately, his late stage cancer has spread to his bones, making his legs not so useful these days. He manages to get around in his rocket red electric scooter. He is still making goals and enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and EATING. Salmon, fruit, homemade soup, black licorice and chocolate cake make up the food groups. His son Charles and wife Terry take loving care of him at home with the help of the best hospice nurse in the world and other therapists. While his out-of-town children Damion, Melonie, and Bridget travel to see him every few weeks.
